New Fire Department to call Albion home in 2025

  • Fresh beginnings for the new Queensland Fire Department in contemporary Albion headquarters in 2025.
  • More than 500 staff from four sites to relocate in 2025 delivering greater return on investment and efficiencies.
  • The former TAB building will be refurbished and upgraded into a contemporary 5-Star NABERS green space, adding to the urban renewal of Albion.

The future Queensland Fire Department will move to a new contemporary Albion headquarters in 2025.

The move makes way for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), which will become the Queensland Fire Department (QFD) in June 2024, to set itself up for future success.

The new office at 240 Sandgate Road, Albion, will bring together more than 500 QFD state level executives and corporate staff currently located across offices at Kedron, Albion and Brisbane city.

QFD will continue to have a presence at the Kedron Emergency Services Complex along with the Queensland Ambulance Service and Queensland Police Service.

The move to the new building, formerly the TAB building and marketed as Hudson Common, is prompted in part due to machinery of government changes and reforms including the Inspector General Emergency Management review and a number of internal reviews.

QFES has also been considering its future options for many years with issues around accommodating growth at the Kedron facility and the need to lease other properties in Brisbane.

Consolidating the headquarters and three other office locations will deliver better value for money, provide room to grow and enable better collaboration between staff.

The building is currently being refurbished and will be a contemporary, 5-Star (NABERS) green office with purpose-designed workspaces. It is located 4 kilometres from the CBD and is close to transport infrastructure.  It is part of a wider urban renewal of the Albion area including the proposed Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Breakfast Creek Indoor Sport Centre.

QFES has appointed Cox Architecture as the lead designer for the fit out of the Hudson Common building.

Quotes attributable to the Minister for Fire and Disaster Recovery Nikki Boyd:

“This is an incredible time for the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services as they move to become the Queensland Fire Department,” Ms Boyd said.

“The creation of the new QFD later this year and move to its new headquarters in 2025 are significant milestones in the history of this great organisation.

“This is not only great news for QFD but also for the Albion community and businesses with more than 500 state personnel coming together, a massive economic injection for the area. It will also enable better frontline and support service delivery to the community.”

Quotes attributable to Acting Commissioner Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Steve Smith:

“Consolidating our State headquarters into one dedicated, customised, contemporary space is an extraordinary opportunity for the department,” A/Commissioner Smith said.

“Bringing our currently dispersed offices from Kedron, Makerston House in the CBD, 77 and 85 Hudson Road Albion together will deliver better return on our investment and work efficiencies.

“This is a significant project and we will take the time to ensure it is done well. We will consult with our industrial stakeholders and our staff will be engaged over the coming months on the design and fit-out plans before the move in 2025,” he said.
