Oliver and Isla crowned most popular names for 2023

  • Isla returns to first place amongst girl names, while Oliver retains the most popular boy name for 11th year in a row.
  • Isla and Oliver last topped the list together in 2021
  • Almost 60,000 births were registered in the state in 2023.

The most popular Queensland names for 2023 have been revealed, with Oliver and Isla topping the list.

Data from Queensland’s Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages has been providing insight into naming trends since records began in 1856.

Isla was the most frequent name for 285 newborn girls in 2023, while Oliver retained first place for names for boys (451) – for the 11th year in a row.

The combination of Oliver and Isla holding the top spots previously occurred in 2021, highlighting the ongoing popularity of both names with parents in the Sunshine State.

Queensland registered 58,959 births in 2023 – the third highest of Australian states and territories, and almost 3800 fewer than the previous year (62,740).

The regions with the highest registered births, identified by postcode, include Toowoomba (1442), followed by Coomera (1290) and Beenleigh (1139).

The annual summary showed there were 6,004 different first names given for boys, and 6,922 for girls across the state.

Quotes attributable to the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Domestic and Family Violence, Yvette D’Ath:

“Identifying 6,922 distinct first names for girls and 6,004 for boys born during 2023 really reflects the remarkable growing population and cultural diversity of Queensland.

“It is particularly incredible that Oliver, a name common in medieval times, continues to see such popularity this many years in a row – and is the most frequently chosen name in general by a large margin.

“To put its dominance into perspective, Oliver has held the top spot since the Queensland Maroons won their famous eighth consecutive State of Origin series.

“Many of the top boy names have remained stable over the last decade, while there has been a slightly greater diversity in girl names across the same period.

“The entire top 10 names for boys from 2022 have made a reappearance in 2023, albeit in a slightly different order.

“Harper and Ivy have remained popular choices over the last few years, appearing again in the top 10, while Aaliyah has made a return to the top 100.

“I’m told Yvette is a long way off the top 10, with less than 5 registered in 2023.

“While we celebrate these joyous occasions for those in 2023, it is also the perfect time to remind prospective parents to register new babies within 60 days to gain a birth certificate, which will help them access essential health care, government and childcare services.”
