Minister for Police and Community Safety
The Honourable Mark Ryan
- Police are prepared for an increase in crowds partaking in NYE celebrations across Queensland.
- Many roads and bridge closures will be in place for the festivities, and revellers are urged to plan their trips appropriately.
- Make sure you have a designated driver if you plan to drink.
Police officers across the state will be out in full force tonight, December 31, encouraging crowds to have fun but stay safe as they farewell 2023 on New Year’s Eve.
One of the most celebrated nights for thousands of revellers, New Year’s Eve is also one of the busiest for police with more people on the roads and in our waterways than any other time of year.
Those planning to travel for the festivities are advised to take public transportation or arrange a designated driver.
In Brisbane, if you're thinking about driving, be aware that many street and bridge closures will be in place including Adelaide Street, William Street, George Street, Little Stanley Street, Grey Street, Melbourne Street and Fish Lane.
Public transport across southeast Queensland will also be free to ride, starting from 8pm till 5:30am on New Year's Day, and we will also see extra services put on from 8:40pm.
Boaties and other recreational water users are urged to keep an eye on the weather and be prepared to change plans.
Quotes attributable to the Minister:
“New Years Eve is a great night, a time to celebrate with family and friends but poor decisions can have dire and lifelong consequences,” Minister Ryan said.
“The key to a great New Year’s Eve is to plan ahead for a fun but safe night. Not only plan where you are going but plan how to get home safely.
“Remember, celebrating a new year and saying goodbye to 2023 is a special time for everyone, not just a few, and I remind those enjoying the festivities to be mindful and considerate of others.”
“Stay safe and have fun.”
Quotes attributable to Superintendent Craig Weatherley:
“We have additional police in the air, on the water, and across the state tonight, ensuring people are able to ring in the new year as safely as possible,” Superintendent Weatherley said.
“From flooding in the north to fires and storms in the south, it has been a difficult year for a lot of people who are undoubtedly looking to enjoy themselves.”
“Make sure you plan ahead and celebrate responsibly.”
“Monitor your alcohol consumption, and never drink and drive.”
New Year’s Eve safety tips:
- Use public transport or ride sharing services where possible and be patient with other commuters waiting for these services.
- Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings. If you feel threatened or find yourself in an uncomfortable situation, leave immediately and go to a place where you feel safe.
- Look after your friends.
- Consider the necessity of the items you are carrying in your handbag or wallet and try to keep valuables to a minimum.
- Plan ahead as to how many drinks you will have and stick to the plan by monitoring your drinking.
