Time is running out to lock in energy-efficient appliance rebates of up to $1000

  • Queensland’s nation-leading energy-efficient appliance rebate about to be fully exhausted
  • Black Friday sales offer big opportunities for power bill savings
  • Up to $1000 cash-back to help households lower their costs of living.
  • Eligible appliance purchases must be made and installed by 4 December 2023, with applications to be lodged within 30 days.

The countdown is on to join more than 40,000 Queensland households who’ve received hundreds of dollars cash back on new energy efficient appliances, with the rebate program entering its final days.

Queenslanders have just over two weeks left to purchase new appliances and install air conditioners and hot water systems, to be eligible for their share in the Palaszczuk Government’s $44 million Climate Smart Energy Savers initiative.

The program offers cash back of up to $1000 on a range of appliances with energy-efficiency ratings of 4 stars or better.

Queenslanders who make the switch to energy efficient appliances can expect to slash their energy bills by about $102 on average each year, while also reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by about 0.27 tonnes CO2-e.

In total, it’s estimated that on the rebates already approved, it will save around 11,000 tonnes of CO2 in the air - or the equivalent of taking an estimated 3,080 cars off the roads.

Low-income households have made the most of the rebate, with 56 per cent of the funding going directly to low-income earners, who on average received $580 cash back.

For those still wanting to apply, plug-in appliances such as dryers, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerators must be purchased on or before 4 December.

Households will have 30 days from the purchase date to have their appliance delivered, and to lodge their applications.

Hot water systems and air conditioners must be installed by licensed contractors before the closing date and households have 30 days from installation to lodge an application.

Retailers and installers are encouraged to take note of key delivery, installation and application timeframes so customers don’t miss out on their rebates, as appliances must be in homes before applications are lodged.

Quotes attributable to Minister for Energy and Public Works, Mick de Brenni:

“The Palaszczuk Government is focused on helping Queenslanders tackle the cost of living through the Climate Smart Energy Savers program, putting cash back straight into the pockets of Queenslanders, upfront and then year after year.

“As we approach the Black Friday Sales, there’s never been a better time to purchase new energy efficient appliances for less, with a low-income earner potentially picking up a fridge for free, or a washing machine for just $50.

“Not only will the program mean initial savings of hundreds of dollars at the time of purchase, but it also means ongoing savings off household power bills for years to come.

“But anyone considering a new appliance should get in quick. Only purchases and installations made on or before 4 December will be eligible for the rebate, and households must lodge their application within 30 days of the purchase to ensure they don’t miss out.”

These rebates are among a range of measures the Palaszczuk Government is doing to help Queensland households feeling the financial pinch.

“Earlier this year we announced a record $8.2 billion package of concessions to help relieve the pressure.

“These concessions include household rebates of $550 for Queensland households, and $1072 for the most vulnerable households, as part of the largest electricity bill relief package in the nation.

“For some families, our rebates will mean food on the table, shoes or nappies for the kids or even a gift under the tree this Christmas.”

Further information:
Washing machines have been the most popular appliance purchased through the program, totaling about 35 per cent of approved rebates, while refrigerators accounted for 30 per cent) and dishwashers accounted for 16 per cent.

Moving closer to summer, air conditioner rebates continue to grow, with almost 3500 approved applications.

Almost 9000 regional Queensland households are now using their new appliance, making up about 30 per cent of approved applications.
