The Honourable Dr Steven Miles
Minister for Regional Development and Manufacturing and Minister for Water
The Honourable Glenn Butcher
- Water Minister Glenn Butcher has called out the LNP over a scare campaign attacking Bribie Island residents
- Bribie Island has been ruled out as a location for SEQ’s next desalination plant
- Seqwater is continuing detailed investigation on appropriate location for the new facility
The LNP must end their scare campaign on Bribie Island and detail what their plan for water security in Queensland is.
Water Minister Glenn Butcher has called out David Crisafulli and the LNP over letterbox drops and an untrue ad campaign about a desalination plant on Bribie Island.
The Palaszczuk Government has repeatedly ruled out Bribie Island as a location for the desalination plant.
Bribie Island is a significant distance from critical connections to the SEQ water grid and there are financial, logistical and environmental reasons that make it an illogical location for the new facility.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Premier Steven Miles:
“To be very clear. I am categorically ruling out a desalination plant on Bribie Island. This government will not build one there, and the LNP is lying to Bribie Islanders.
“It is really disappointing that all the LNP can do is sling mud – with no substance – and not actually come up with a policy, or plan.
“We know that when David Crisafulli and Jarrod Bleijie sat around Campbell Newman’s cabinet table, all they did was cut, sack and sell. That’s all they know how to do.
“The Palaszczuk Government’s plan for water security is clear and laid out for Queenslanders. That’s why Queenslanders trust us to plan for their futures.”
Quotes attributable to Water Minister Glenn Butcher:
“I have repeatedly said that a new desalination plant is not going to be built on Bribie Island.
“This is a shameful scare campaign by the LNP and it must stop.
“The LNP is wasting time and money on ads and flyers that are full of lies.
“You’d think they could use their time and resources to actually formulate a plan or policy, but that would be too difficult.
“The Palaszczuk Labor Government has a proven track record of listening to experts and delivering critical water infrastructure for Queenslanders.”
