Minister for Resources
The Honourable Scott Stewart

  • The Department of Resources has filed an application in the Land Court to start forfeiture action against the lessee of Double Island, Fortune Island Holding Company
  • The Land Court will be asked to determine whether Fortune’s lease may be forfeited.

An application has been filed with the Land Court to commence forfeiture action against the operators of Double Island off the Far North Queensland coast.

Fortune Island was notified earlier this year of the Queensland Government’s intention to begin forfeiture action.

Quotes attributable to Resources Minister Scott Stewart:

“Our islands are natural assets that we want Queenslanders to be able to enjoy as part of our great lifestyle,” Mr Stewart said.

“As a government we are committed to the responsible development of our island resorts for the jobs and business opportunities they create in regional Queensland.

“However, lessees on government property are required to meet the conditions on their leases.

“As this matter is now before the Court, it would not be appropriate for me to make any further comments at this stage.”

Quotes attributable to Assistant Tourism Minister and Member for Cairns Michael Healy:

“Both myself and Craig Crawford, but more importantly, the community welcome this step.”
