New Under Treasurer announced

• Respected senior public servant, Mr Michael Carey, has been appointed as Queensland’s next Under Treasurer.
• Mr Carey is currently Associate Director-General, the Cabinet Office, Department of the Premier and Cabinet
• From 2020-2021, he was Deputy Under Treasurer, Investment Commercial and Industry, Queensland Treasury
• The appointment follows a trans-Tasman search and an open merit recruitment process.

In this role, Mr Carey will play a pivotal part in overseeing Queensland’s financial management and economic stewardship.

Mr Carey brings a unique mix of relevant experience and skills to the role as an accomplished values-based leader with extensive experience in the Queensland public sector.

He has led major divisions across four Queensland Government agencies, with responsibility for investment attraction, international trade and investment, and policy and program reforms to strengthen Queensland’s economic development and social responsibility.

Brief biography:

Michael Carey is a senior executive, with over 20 years of leadership experience including in investment attraction and facilitation, international trade and investment.   He has lead policy and program reforms which have strongly contributed to Queensland's economic and social development.

He is currently Associate Director-General, the Cabinet Office, Department of the Premier and Cabinet, and has previously served as the Chief Executive Officer of Trade and Investment Queensland and Deputy Under Treasurer, Investment Commercial and Industry in Queensland Treasury.

He has a Masters of Public Policy, with Distinction from the University of Oxford, a Bachelor of Arts and Law (Hons) and, a Bachelor of Commerce (Politics and Public Policy) (Hons).
