Over $1.5 billion in hospital tenders awarded for Brisbane’s northside

•  The Palaszczuk Government has awarded over $1.5 billion in tenders for The Prince Charles Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital expansions
• Hutchinson Builders will lead the detailed design of the $360 million Prince Charles Hospital Expansion, delivering 93 extra beds and supporting 728 jobs.

The Palaszczuk Government has today awarded more than $1.5 billion in hospital expansion tenders for The Prince Charles Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital expansions.

The investment will deliver hundreds of new beds for Brisbane’s northside, ensuring Queenslanders have access to the healthcare facilities they need closer to home.

The $360 million Prince Charles Hospital expansion will deliver satellite medical imaging, pharmacy and pathology services and a new emergency department with 53 extra treatment spaces, adding 93 beds to the facility.

This funding includes a $60 million boost to deliver two additional operating theatres, a new paediatric outpatient service with 16 treatment spaces, and a Satellite Central Sterilisation Service Department.

The $1.148 billion Redcliffe Hospital expansion will deliver 204 extra hospital beds, the expansion of medical imaging, pharmacy and pathology areas, additional operating theatres, Emergency Department treatment spaces and birthing suites, as well as endoscopy, outpatient consult and diagnostic rooms.

This funding includes an $88 million funding boost to allow the ambulatory care and clinical services buildings to be combined into one integrated facility, supporting the efficient delivery of health services.

Early site establishment works for The Prince Charles Hospital and Redcliffe Hospital expansions will begin in 2024.

The Prince Charles Hospital Expansion is expected to be complete in 2027.

The Redcliffe Hospital Expansion is expected to be complete in 2028. 

This announcement follows the awarding of nearly $6 billion in hospital tenders, including:

• $710 million awarded to BESIX Watpac to deliver the Ipswich Hospital Stage 2 Expansion, delivering an additional 200 beds
• $465 million awarded to Built QLD to deliver the QEII Jubilee Hospital Expansion, delivering an 112 additional beds
• $530 million awarded to John Holland to deliver the Logan Hospital Stage 2 Expansion project, delivering an additional 112 beds.
• $350 million awarded to John Holland to deliver the major expansion at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, delivering an additional 249 beds.
• $250 million awarded to Hansen Yuncken to deliver the Cairns Hospital Expansion project delivering an additional 96 beds.
• $250 million awarded to BESIX Watpac to deliver the Mackay Base Hospital Expansion, delivering an additional 128 beds.
• $530 million awarded to BESIX Watpac to deliver the Townsville University Hospital Expansion, delivering an additional 143 beds.
• $1.3 billion awarded to John Holland to deliver Stage 1 of the new Toowoomba Hospital, delivering an additional 118 beds.

Under the two-stage managing contractor model, Multiplex Constructions will deliver the detailed design for the expansion of Redcliffe Hospital (stage 1).

Under the two-stage managing contractor model, Hutchinson Builders will deliver the detailed design for the expansion of The Prince Charles Hospital (stage 1).

Hutchinson Builders and Multiplex Constructions must deliver a value for money guaranteed construction price for the project before the main works construction phase (stage 2) can begin.

The additional $60 million for The Prince Charles Hospital expansion and the additional $88 million for the Redcliffe Hospital Expansion will be allocated from the Capacity Expansion Program (CEP) contingency fund.

The Queensland Government is delivering the nation’s largest health capital program and CEP – part of the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan − will ensure Queenslanders living in some of the state’s fastest growing regions will continue to have access to world-class health care.

The Queensland record-breaking CEP investment of $9.785 billion will see the expansion of 11 hospitals, on top of delivering three new hospitals and a cancer centre.

The Health and Hospitals Plan includes the provision of an addition 2509 extra beds over six years – including 199 more beds in 2023 and 239 more beds in 2024 – in addition to 869 beds already being delivered through current expansion projects.
