Long standing servant of fellow Queenslanders awarded Order of Australia
Professor Peter Martin APM has been awarded the Order of Australia in the King’s Birthday honours.
Professor Martin has been made a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for significant service to public administration in Queensland.
Professor Martin has served the people of Queensland for more than 40 years in a career that spans law enforcement and corrective services.
Currently a Professor of Practice at the Griffith Criminology Institute, Griffith University, Professor Martin was previously a Deputy Commissioner in the Queensland Police Service and then subsequently was appointed Commissioner, Queensland Corrective Services in 2017.
Professor Martin’s tenure as Corrections Commissioner came at a transformational time in the history of Queensland’s Corrective Services.
He was instrumental in the professionalisation of QCS.
He oversaw the implementation of major reforms in corrections including the implementation of the Sofronoff Report into Queensland’s s parole system, and the development of ‘Corrections 2030’, the blueprint for the transformation of QCS to become arguably the best trained and best equipped corrective service in the southern hemisphere.
He also oversaw the historic transition of two major Queensland Correctional facilities from private to public operation.

Professor Martin was the Deputy Commissioner, Regional Operations, Queensland Police Service.
He served as a police officer in Queensland, Australia for some 38 years.
He is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the Faculty of Health, School of Psychology and Counselling at Queensland University of Technology (QUT).
His doctoral thesis was focused on the police role in reducing alcohol-related harm inside and outside licensed premises.
Peter is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland.
He also has an Executive Masters in Public Administration through the Australian and New Zealand School of Government and Griffith University.
He has a Bachelor of Arts in Justice Administration (Griffith University) as well as other tertiary qualifications.
He is a graduate of the Leadership in Counter-Terrorism (LinCT) Pacific Program.
Peter was appointed a Doctor of the University (Honoris Causa), Griffith University.
He holds appointments on committees and boards including the Queensland Homicide Victim Support Group and the Greig-Asbury Private Ancillary Fund.
In 2010, Peter was inducted into the Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame at the George Mason University, Virginia, US.
He was awarded the Australian Police Medal on Australia Day 2008 for his contribution to policing and the community of Queensland.
He is the recipient of the Meritorious Service Awards from both Police and Corrections, the Emergency Services Medal, National Police Service Medal, National Medal and the Queensland Police Service Medal.
