  • It comes as Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon today hosts a roundtable on the Sunshine Coast with local housing providers and homelessness services

A new social housing complex on the Sunshine Coast is set to welcome its first residents within the next fortnight as crews today wrap up construction.

Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon today visited the Sunshine Coast to mark the completion and to meet with local housing and homelessness services.

The $11.7 million complex in Beerwah has 17 one-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom townhouses as well as a community room, which will be used to provide onsite support to tenants.

The build adds to a record $3.9 billion for social and affordable housing, the single largest concentrated investment in Queensland’s history, to help deliver 13,000 homes.

Quotes attributable the Minister for Housing Meaghan Scanlon:

“We know housing pressure is being felt across the country, and as a government, it’s important we listen to local services to understand what the housing situation is in their communities and look at how we can work with them to deliver better outcomes for people at a local level.

“This project is a great example of what can be achieved when government works with local community housing providers like Coast2Bay to help the most vulnerable in our community. And I’m looking forward to the roundtable today to meet with providers in the region.

“Projects like this are what our social housing program is about - helping Queenslanders get a secure roof over their head when they need it most.

“We’ve delivered on average more than 10 homes a week since coming to government and I’m keen to see more homes like this delivered as soon as possible.

Quotes attributable to Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt:

“In just the last five years, we’ve delivered more than 160 new social homes on the Sunshine Coast.

“This new complex will provide help for the most vulnerable in our community, and importantly provides greater accessibility to local shops, services and public transport.”

Quotes attributable to Coast2Bay Housing Group CEO Andrew Elvin:

“Innovative partnerships like this one with the Queensland Government, make a very important contribution to social and affordable housing that meets community needs in growing regional areas such as the Sunshine Coast.

“These townhouses will be more than a home, they will be a place for people to live affordably, be good neighbours, contribute to the community and be a place where families and individuals in need can flourish.”
