Three Queensland Corrective Services officers recognised for extraordinary service with Australian Corrections Medals

Three Queensland Corrective Services officers have been recognised in the Australia Day Honours, receiving the Australian Corrections Medal.

Assistant Commissioner Eloise Hamlett, Superintendent Rhiannon Porter and Custodial Supervisor Shane Allwood were named in the honours list for distinguished service by an operational member of an Australian state or territory corrections service for adults.

Acting Corrective Services Minister, Mark Furner, congratulated the three officers and thanked them for their long-term commitment to public safety.

“I’d like to recognise these three worthy recipients of the Australian Corrections Medals,” Minister Furner said.

“Your dedication, passion and commitment has led to great change and positive outcomes for QCS.

“Today we recognise you for going above and beyond the call of duty, and congratulate you on this remarkable achievement.”

QCS Commissioner Paul Stewart APM congratulated the officers for their service and commitment to the public safety agency.

“Our officers work tirelessly every day to improve the lives of those in our custody and care and we value their contribution and also never losing sight of the core work of our agency – making Queensland safer for everybody,” Commissioner Stewart said.

“On behalf of all QCS officers, congratulations to Eloise, Rhiannon and Shane for their outstanding commitment to the safety of the community and creating stronger communities.”

This year recipients from QCS are:
Assistant Commissioner Eloise Hamlett has provided 22 years of distinguished service across all divisions within QCS after starting her career as a psychologist at Borallon Correctional Centre. She is particularly passionate about improving responses to First Nations people, who are over represented in the criminal justice system, actively contributing to strategies that increase the percentage of First Nations staffing, particularly for the northern and far northern regions. She is currently Assistant Commissioner, Central and Northern Region Command for QCS.

Superintendent Rhiannon Porter has significantly contributed to community safety in Queensland. She is ethical, professional, hard-working, and consistently supportive of the professional development and growth of others around her. Commencing at the frontline of Community Corrections in 2008, Ms Porter truly defines an operational leader who has contributed significantly to the corrections environment. Her latest success has been developing and implementing leading-edge methodologies enabling the optimisation and modernisation of frontline services. This work is ground-breaking, and the first of its kind in Australia.

Custodial Supervisor Shane Allwood has served more than 19 years within Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) with an absolute dedication to duty, community safety and offender rehabilitation. CS Allwood commenced his career as a Custodial Correctional Officer before progressing to a Correctional Supervisor. He has devoted his career to the safety and security of staff and prisoners within the Maryborough Correctional Centre. His present role involves managing high risk portfolios including breaches of discipline, safety orders, the high-risk register and portfolio, including prisoners of concern. He is exemplary in impartial decision making and is continuously relied upon for advice from other Correctional Supervisors and Custodial Correctional Officers.
