5000th social housing milestone for Queensland

The Palaszczuk Government has commenced its 5000^th social home supported by the record $3.9 billion investment in social and affordable housing across Queensland.

Two new projects in Townsville helped reach the milestone, bringing the number of social housing commencements since coming to government to 5000.

These latest developments will be constructed in partnership with First Nations community housing provider Yumba-Meta Limited and will deliver a total of 16 new homes made up of both units and duplexes at two locations in the suburb of Rasmussen in Townsville.

The projects will be built to assist First Nations women and children with applications on the social housing register.

The development comes as the government’s Quickstarts Qld program also achieved a milestone, with the program’s 1000^th social home commenced.

Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch said the developments put the government well on track to meet its target of almost 3000 Quickstarts Qld commencements by 30 June 2025.

“The first year of Quickstarts Qld was focused on identifying areas of housing need in the state and suitable sites for construction of new social housing projects,” Ms Enoch said.

“We are forging ahead with our program of delivering more social housing across the state.

“I am pleased to say that the 1000^th home we’ve signed up as part of this program will be in a social housing complex in Caloundra, consisting of 16 one-bedroom units.

“This $7.79 million project will deliver housing to eligible people in the Sunshine Coast and support about 25 full time jobs once construction begins in April.”

Quickstarts Queensland is just one of a variety of programs being delivered by the Palaszczuk Government.

“Our almost $4 billion for social and affordable housing is the largest concentrated investment in Queensland’s history,” Ms Enoch said.

“This investment means we are housing more vulnerable Queenslanders sooner. In fact, we will have commenced 13,000 new social and affordable homes by 2027.

Minister Enoch and Member for Springwood, Mick de Brenni today turned the sod on a new social housing complex in Springwood, which once complete, will provide 35 social homes for Queenslanders in need.

“I am incredibly proud of the progress we have made so far in delivering more social and affordable housing for Queenslanders, including here in Springwood,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Since coming to government in 2015, we have commenced more than 5000 social homes and completed more than 4000.

“That’s 4000 homes for Queensland families, including some of the most vulnerable people in our community.”
