Postcodes across Queensland have been compared to determine which areas have the most residential rooftop solar, with Gladstone placing 13 and Rockhampton 30 on the list.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said over 722,000 Queensland homes have solar.
“Together, Queensland’s homes account to over 3.5 GW capacity, that’s more generation capacity than Qld’s 2 largest power stations combined (Gladstone 1,680MW, Stanwell 1,460MW),” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“I want to thank every Queenslander who has helped lower electricity prices and our carbon footprint by installing solar panels on their home – your home is powering the state.”
Member for Gladstone Glenn Butcher said it was great to see Gladstone so high on the list.
“Gladstone’s 4680 postcode is number 13 in the list of suburbs with the most residential rooftop solar in Queensland,” Mr Butcher said.
“It’s a great outcome that so many people in Central Queensland are choosing to install solar on their homes.”
Member for Rockhampton Barry O’Rourke said Queensland was leading the nation in rooftop solar.
“Rockhampton’s 4701 postcode is the 30th highest in Queensland,” Mr O’Rourke said.
“It’s great to see so many people installing solar panels on their homes across Rocky and Central Queensland. They’re helping to bring down power prices and use cleaner energy.”
Member for Keppel Brittany Lauga said the number of Central Queenslanders with solar panels was growing.
“Queensland is leading, not only Australia, but the world in rooftop solar,” Ms Lauga said.
“I want to thank community members for installing solar panels and being part of Queensland’s biggest power station.”
Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said a new solar system is connected every 11 minutes in Queensland.
“While rooftop solar supplied 8.9 per cent of Queensland’s total energy needs last financial year, in the middle of the day it can represent more than 40 per cent of generation,” he said.
Overall Queensland continues to be the nation leader in rooftop solar, outstripping the other states with almost 88,000 more installations than its nearest rival, New South Wales.
Mr de Brenni said the Clean Energy Regulator data shows the southern states are starting to catch on to the important role household systems can play in providing clean energy into the grid.
