Construction completed on new social housing units in Slacks Creek

Construction has been officially completed on a new social housing complex in Slacks Creek, marking almost 4000 social and affordable homes completed by the Palaszczuk Government since 2015.

Minister for Communities and Housing Leeanne Enoch today visited the $2.44 million social housing complex for the official handover of construction.

“This new social housing complex features three one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom units, some of which have been specially designed to make them suitable for older tenants and people with disability,” Ms Enoch said.

“Of these units, two are built to Platinum standard under Liveable Housing Design, which are suitable for people who mobilise in wheelchairs, and one has been built to Gold standard with features such as wider hallways and doors for older people and people with impaired mobility.

“Not only will these social housing units provide a boost to social housing stock in the local area, they have also provided a boost to the local economy, supporting approximately eight full-time equivalent jobs during construction.

“I am pleased to say that since coming to government in 2015, we have commenced almost 5000 new social and affordable homes and completed almost 4000 new social and affordable homes for Queenslanders.”

The Palaszczuk Government’s $2.44 million funding for this social housing complex, is part of the government’s commitment to building more social housing across the state. 

Attorney-General and Member for Waterford Shannon Fentiman said this new unit complex will help support residents in her electorate.

"The Palaszczuk Government is committed to doing everything we can to enable families in Waterford and right across the state to get into suitable, safe and stable housing,” Minister Fentiman said.

“Now that the handover has been completed, allocations will soon begin, and tenants could be calling these units home within weeks.”

Ms Enoch said this program forms part of the Queensland Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2021-2025.

“This Action Plan will boost housing supply and increase housing and homelessness supports across the state,” she said.

“It is backed by the largest concentrated investment in social and affordable housing in Queensland’s history - $2.9 billion in funding, including $1.9 billion over four years for the new Queensland Housing Investment Growth Initiative (QHIGI) and a $1 billion Housing Investment Fund.

“Through QuickStarts Qld, a component of the QHIGI, construction on an additional 178 new social and affordable housing homes will be commenced in the Logan area through a planned investment of $46.7 million over four years.

“This will support more than 147 full-time equivalent construction jobs.

“This in addition to the 369 new social homes already commenced in the Logan area under the Queensland Housing Strategy 2017-2027.”

Ms Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government was also investing in other programs to help provide social housing solutions for vulnerable Queenslanders, including the recently launched Help to Home initiative.

“Not only are we building new social and affordable housing, we’re also delivering programs to help Queenslanders secure and sustain tenancies,” she said.

“This includes our Help to Home program, which is gathering momentum with 19 properties in Beenleigh and Keperra, out of the 31 submitting expressions of interest, now fully tenanted providing secure, safe and affordable homes for Queenslanders in need.”
