The Honourable Mark Bailey

VISION

Major milestones are rolling on for the Bruce Highway Upgrade – Deception Bay Road Interchange project at Burpengary, with girders installed on the second new bridge over the highway this month.

This second, 110m-long bridge, made of 44 bridge girders and more than 2000 cubic metres of concrete, is a huge step towards completing the major interchange upgrade.

Construction is well underway, with the first of two new bridges over the highway opening to traffic earlier this year, as well as an upgraded northbound highway entry ramp.

The project includes two, new, parallel bridges over the Bruce Highway, upgrading two signalised intersections on Deception Bay Road, increasing the length and capacity of existing entry and exit ramps and providing active transport facilities for people walking and riding.

Major construction started in November 2020 and is expected to be completed in early 2023, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The Bruce Highway Upgrade – Deception Bay Road Interchange is funded on an 80/20 basis, with the Australian Government contributing $130.64 million and Queensland Government contributing $32.66 million.

"Installing girders for this second new bridge over the highway is a huge step towards completing this major interchange upgrade, which is going to make it safer and quicker for motorists to get home to their families.

"This project will improve travel times for motorists accessing local roads around Burpengary and Narangba, while also creating safe crossing facilities over the highway for people walking and riding.

"The Palaszczuk Government is committed to building a better, more resilient Bruce Highway, and interchange upgrades are a key way to achieve that.

“Our investment in the region is boosting the local economy, and supporting good jobs at a time when it’s most needed.”

Quotes attributable to State Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting:

“Watching the bridge girders be craned in over the past few weeks shows just how mammoth a task this upgrade is.

“The new bridge is now taking shape right before our eyes, which will double the capacity over the highway and help keep cars moving on local roads, and the Bruce below.

“I’m proud to be part of a Labor Government that is investing in better roads for all Queenslanders, and especially the people of Deception Bay.”

Quotes attributable to State Member for Kurwongbah Shane King:

“About 270 good, secure jobs are being supported by this major project, which is so important to families at this time.

“That also means we have more people spending and supporting local economies during the work.

“Once complete, the interchange will be much safer and more efficient for local drivers, which is a win win for the busy bayside.”
