As celebrations wrap up for Rural Fire Service Week, two loyal RFS volunteers in Northern Region were presented prestigious awards for their service,

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan, who was represented at the event by Member for Thuringowa Aaron Harper, said Fire Warden Jane Nixon received Northern Region’s Volunteer of the Year Award.

“Jane has been tirelessly serving the Northern Region community in times of need for 27 years,” Minister Ryan said.

“In 1995, she joined the Nome District Rural Fire Brigade, and in 2017 Jane was appointed to the position of Fire Warden for the Nome District Fire Warden Area.

“She has gone above and beyond her duties as a volunteer to build a safe and resilient community.

Mr Harper said it was thanks to volunteers like Jane we are able to support our community during tough times, whether that be bushfires, floods or storms.

“Natural disasters are not uncommon in the north and to know that there are local volunteers ready to act in times of need is a great comfort.

“The selfless work that people like Jane perform is invaluable to residents and businesses in rural regions.’’

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Acting Assistant Commissioner Northern Region Michael O’Neil said Jack Waters-Fisher of the Rupertswood Rural Fire Brigade was awarded Northern Region’s Young Volunteer of the Year Award.

“While Jack has only been with the brigade for a year, he has already made a lasting impact on the brigade and the community,” Assistant Commissioner O’Neil said.

“He has shown dedication to the Rupertswood brigade by attending incidents, training and community events, even mentoring current brigade members.

“I know the Rupertswood Brigade is proud of Jack and the effort he has put in to developing his skills.

“Jack is a fantastic asset to Northern Region and an inspiration to all young volunteers.’’
