Volunteers roll up for new Rural Fire Service station

To coincide with Rural Fire Service Week celebrations, Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan MP joined Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) Commissioner Greg Leach to officially open the new Rollingstone Rural Fire Brigade Station.

Minister Ryan said the new station would provide a welcome boost to the Rural Fire Service capability in the greater Townsville area. 

“The Rollingstone Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) was formed 60 years ago and, until now, has operated without a home base.

“This shows their incredible commitment and dedication to the people of Rollingstone,” Minister Ryan said.

“This $450,000 station was made possible due to local council levies, brigade fundraising, a Rural Fire Brigade Association Queensland (RFBAQ) grant, and other government grants.

“This station is a testament to the strong ties the Rollingstone RFB has to the community.

“The shed was constructed by a company in Garbutt,and many local businesses in Rollingstone chipped in to make this a first-class station. 

“It is essential that our volunteers have the necessary infrastructure and equipment they need to fulfil the vital role they play in our communities.

“Rural fire service volunteers and members give up their own time to serve their community through managing bushfire risk, responding to fires, and dedicating time to bushfire education. It’s fantastic to see this level of local support.”

Commissioner Leach said the 39-volunteer-strong brigade has regularly been called on to respond to bushfires, and often lends support to neighbouring brigades. 

“This new shed will enhance the capability of the Rollingstone RFB volunteers to support the local community in the management of bushfires and other emergencies,” Commissioner Leach said.

“The Rural Fire Station is a focal point for the community and the brigade, as it provides a place to meet, train and operate. 

“Our volunteer firefighters have shown they are always ready to respond when disaster strikes, and this new shed will help them do this important work.

“Anything we can do to support and further empower our volunteers to protect their communities is a major benefit for not only QFES, but local residents with homes, properties and businesses.”
