Minister for Health and Ambulance Services
The Honourable Yvette D'Ath

The Palaszczuk Government will invest $355.8 million for an expansion and refurbishment of the Princess Alexandra Hospital that will deliver around 257 extra beds.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said it’s part of the largest investment in new and expanded hospitals and new beds in Queensland’s history.

“This significant investment includes $350 million for a major expansion that will deliver around 249 extra beds by 2026, as well as $5.8 million for a refurbishment of the renal unit that will deliver around 8 extra beds next year,” the Premier said.

“The PA Hospital is one of Queensland’s largest teaching hospitals and this substantial investment will ensure it can continue to meet increasing demand for healthcare services now and into the future.”

The Premier said the major expansion was part of The Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan.

“This $10 billion plan is the largest hospital building and expansion program in Queensland’s history,” the Premier said.

“This plan includes an additional 2,509 extra beds over six years – including 199 more beds in 2023 and 239 more beds in 2024 – in addition to 869 beds already being delivered through current expansion projects.

“This builds on the 1,350 additional beds we’ve opened across the state since 2015.”

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the $350 million major expansion of the Princess Alexandra Hospital will see more space built above the existing Emergency Department to house the new beds and will include more intensive care beds and high dependency beds.

“This major expansion will provide greater access to acute care and intensive care services in Brisbane’s south,” the Minister said.

“In addition, our $5.8 million refurbishment of the renal unit will deliver around 8 extra beds in the second half of next year.

“This project will redesign and refurbish space within the existing renal unit and will increase inpatient dialysis treatment bays.”

Member for Greenslopes Joe Kelly MP welcomed the $355.8 million investment and said it was another example of the Palaszczuk Government’s strong focus on delivering world-class health services and creating local jobs.

“This significant investment will ensure our community can continue to receive the world-class health care they deserve now and into the future,” Mr Kelly said.

“These infrastructure projects will also provide job opportunities for locals, creating around 871 jobs during construction.”

Metro South Health Board Chair Janine Walker AM said she welcomed the Queensland Government’s significant investment in health infrastructure and services for the southside of Brisbane.

“This major funding allocation by the Queensland Government will ensure the Princess Alexandra Hospital can continue to provide highly specialised tertiary and other services into the future as one of the state’s leading hospitals,” Ms Walker said.
