$1.06 billion for expansion of Redcliffe Hospital to deliver 204 extra beds

The Palaszczuk Government will invest $1.06 billion to deliver a major expansion of the Redcliffe Hospital, as part of the largest investment in new and expanded hospitals and new beds in Queensland’s history.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the expansion would boost the hospital’s bed base by around 204 beds.

“Redcliffe is my electorate, and I know the demand for health care is increasing, along with the population in the area,” Minister D’Ath said.

"I'm pleased to announce that the Palaszczuk Government will deliver a $1.06 billion expansion of the Redcliffe Hospital that will add around 204 more beds to the facility.

“The expansion will also include a new clinical services building, new ambulatory care building, and refurbishment of the existing hospital to deliver additional capacity across both clinical and facility support services.

“This major expansion will significantly increase the care offered across the range of inpatient and outpatient services at Redcliffe Hospital.

“It will include additional operating theatres, Emergency Department treatment spaces, endoscopy rooms, birthing suites, outpatient consult rooms, diagnostic rooms, and expansion of medical imaging, pharmacy and pathology areas.”

It is expected that the new ambulatory care building will be operational in the second half of 2026, the new clinical services building will be operational in the second half of 2027, and the refurbishment of the existing hospital will be completed and operational in the second half of 2028.

Member for Bancroft Chris Whiting welcomed the funding announcement for Redcliffe Hospital.

“This billion-dollar expansion of the hospital will expand health service capacity and ensure locals can continue accessing world-class health services into the future,” Mr Whiting said.

Member for Murrumba Steven Miles said this is yet another example of the Palaszczuk Government delivering for our region.

“Building health infrastructure provides local job opportunities, and this project will create around 2,573 jobs during the construction,” Mr Miles said.

Metro North Health Chief Executive Adjunct Professor Jackie Hanson said the expansion will allow Redcliffe Hospital to deliver enhanced services to the growing community.

“The Redcliffe community has benefited in recent years from upgrades at the hospital including upgraded operating theatres and medical imaging services,” Adjunct Professor Hanson said.

“This major expansion will significantly expand bed capacity and allow us to grow the world-class health services we provide.”

Minister D’Ath said the 2022-23 Budget provides additional funding of $9.78 billion over six years to deliver new and expanded hospitals and new beds across the state.

“The Palaszczuk Government’s additional funding of $9.78 billion for new hospitals and new beds is the largest in Queensland’s history,” Minister D’Ath said.

“The new hospitals and hospital expansion projects announced in the Budget will deliver 2,509 extra beds over six years – including 199 more beds in 2023 and 239 more beds in 2024 – in addition to 869 beds already being delivered through current expansion projects.

“This builds on the 1,350 additional beds we’ve opened across the state since 2015.”
