Community groups in the Western Downs and South Burnett can now apply for a grants funding program run by Queensland’s publicly-owned transmission operator.

Energy Minister Mick de Brenni said Powerlink’s $12,500 grants program is offering not-for-profit groups the opportunity to apply for up to $1,500 in funding.

“The Western Downs and South Burnett is home to not just our southern Queensland Renewable Energy Zone, but a number of exceptional community groups.

“By maintaining public ownership of our energy assets, we are in a position to support the communities we work closely with in the delivery of new energy infrastructure.

“This funding program was developed after community research conducted by Powerlink in the two local government areas showed a clear need for grassroots support like this.

“It will support community groups in providing much valued services and support across the region, creating opportunities to improve inclusivity, public safety, health and wellbeing, education or the environment in these regions.

“Whether you run an arts or music group, sporting club, local society, association, or school, we would love you to apply.”

Powerlink Chief Executive Paul Simshauser said this grant funding would hopefully provide a much-needed boost after so many challenging weather events affecting communities in this region.

“These communities have been hit hard by severe weather recently so these funds will hopefully make a difference on the ground,” Mr Simshauser said.

“Powerlink is focused on supporting the communities in which we operate. We want to be part of creating positive legacies for the future.”

Applications for the community small grants program are open now and will close on Tuesday 31 May 2022.
