Nominations open for Multicultural Queensland Awards

Nominations for the 2022 Multicultural Queensland Awards opened today. Individuals and organisations supporting people from diverse backgrounds across the state are encouraged to apply.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Leanne Linard said the awards are a wonderful opportunity to recognise the valuable contributions of those who support and promote a united, harmonious, and inclusive Queensland.

“The last few months have been particularly tough for Queensland.  I am delighted to celebrate the incredible achievements of those committed to providing pathways for Queenslanders of all backgrounds to contribute and belong,” she said. 

“All of last year’s Multicultural Queensland Award winners and highly commended nominees show us that everyone has something to contribute.  When we all contribute, we help strengthen Queensland’s local communities.

“If you know of an organisation or individual who is working hard to break down barriers and create a sense of belonging, now is the time to nominate them.”

The 2021 awards ceremony held at the Queensland Museum last November, celebrated worthy winners such as 15-year-old Zimra Hussein for her outstanding contribution as the first Muslim woman to play for the Brisbane Lions AFL women’s team.

“Being recognised for the award was such a blessing as I’ve always been so passionate about everything I do – and it’s motivated me to do more,” she said. 

“I’m focused on getting more Muslim girls to play sport and do whatever they love. 

“An important role I play in this is to change families’ perspectives about girls in sporting environments because in Afghanistan and Pakistan there’s stigma around women being outdoorsy or physical. 

“I want parents to see me and think – if she can do it, my daughter can as well.”

Beny Bol was also recognised for his tireless work as the President of the Queensland African Communities Council and advocate for Queenslanders of African background.

Other winners were Habib Jamal for his ongoing mission in unifying the diverse Muslim community and Pushing Barriers, an organisation helping refugee youth feel connected through participating in community sport. 

This year the award categories are:

• Outstanding Contribution by a New Queenslander
• Diversity and Inclusion Champion
• Multicultural Sector Outstanding Achiever
• Minister’s Multicultural Award - for the outstanding achievements of a nominee, selected by the Minister from all nominations.
