Show Queensland flower growers some love this Valentine’s Day

Queenslanders have been urged to support Queensland flower growers when they plan floral gifts this Valentine’s Day.

Minister for Agricultural Industry Development and Fisheries and Minister for Rural Communities Mark Furner said Queenslanders were expected to spend up to $77million* in Valentine’s Day gifts, with flowers at the top of the list.

“Just like buying Queensland produce is great for our farmers, buying Queensland flowers is great for our flower growers,” Mr Furner said.

“Cut flower production contributes $154million to agricultural production in our state.

“Many of the growers around the state are small family-run businesses who work very hard to bring those moments of joy on so many occasions.

“I will be supporting Queensland growers by asking for Queensland flowers this Valentine’s Day and a lot of Queenslanders will do the same.”

Mr Furner also urged Queenslanders to support their local plant nurseries.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has led many Queenslanders to rediscover their gardens or enjoy gardening for the first time, supporting many nursery operators,” he said.

“The gross value of nursery production topped $1billion for the first time in 2020/21 and was expected to hit that figure again this financial year.”
