Dedicated QFES staff and volunteers awarded prestigious Australia Day medals for service to communities

In celebration of outstanding commitment to their communities, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) personnel have today been honoured in the Australia Day Honours List as recipients of the highly regarded Australian Fire Service Medal (AFSM) and Emergency Services Medal (ESM).

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said the Australia Day Honours List highlighted extraordinary individuals who went above and beyond in their fields.

“There is no truer Australian than those who serve their communities during emergencies and disasters,” Mr Ryan said.

“Queenslanders are no stranger to natural disasters and the past few months have demonstrated just how much we rely on our neighbours for support.

“QFES staff and volunteers never hesitate to put themselves at the frontline to help their communities.

“Today these recipients join a prestigious list of Australians whose efforts have made our country a better place.”

QFES South-Western Region Assistant Commissioner David Hermann was awarded the AFSM for his exemplary leadership, operational excellence and contribution to operational capability and community resilience.

Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteer William Brand was also awarded the AFSM for his sustained contribution to the Brooweena and surrounding communities as First Officer of the Brooweena District Rural Fire Brigade.

State Emergency Service (SES) Operational Capability Officer Jason Daniels was awarded the ESM for his distinguished service to the community during storms, flooding, bushfires and search and rescue operations since 1997.

Volunteer Marine Rescue (VMR) Queensland State Manager Keith Williams was also awarded the ESM for his dedication to the delivery of water safety education to VMR members and the wider community.

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach congratulated each of the recipients for their outstanding work and advocacy within Queensland communities.

“Assistant Commissioner Hermann, Mr Brand and Mr Daniels all exemplify the QFES values of respect, integrity, courage, loyalty and trust,” Mr Leach said.

“They each deserve our recognition and thanks for their distinguished service to their communities.

“Thanks to the efforts of these recipients, Queenslanders can rest assured they are in safe hands when disaster strikes.”

Several other staff and volunteers will also be recognised at the QFES Australia Day Achievement Award ceremonies across the state later this year.

“QSuper award ceremonies have been postponed due to the current COVID-19 situation, but we look forward to celebrating with everyone soon,” Mr Leach said.
