Queensland Government builder QBuild is opening applications for 100 trades jobs, including 20 apprenticeships, in key locations across the state.

Minister for Public Works Mick de Brenni said advertising was opening to fill 100 jobs in centres including Atherton, Bundaberg, Cairns, Kingaroy, Maryborough, Rockhampton, Thursday Island and Toowoomba.

The 80 qualified trades jobs include plumbers, painters, electricians, carpenters and refrigeration mechanics.

The latest round of recruitment is part of the Queensland Government’s Rebuilding QBuild initiative which will see 300 trades-based staff, including 60 apprentices, employed in the three years to August 2022, Mr de Brenni said.

“Rebuild QBuild is creating secure employment and developing the trade skills for Queensland’s future, strengthening QBuild’s capability to build and maintain key government infrastructure and train the next generation of skilled workers for the state’s $47.4 billion construction sector,” Mr de Brenni said.

“Previous intakes of QBuild apprentices have come from diverse backgrounds, including former defence force personnel, people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent, women and mature aged apprentices all with varying levels of trade related experience.

“For this next apprentice intake, we will specifically encourage young Queensland women to consider hard-hat careers.

“Right now, 16 per cent of QBuild’s apprentices are women.

“That’s even better than the National Women in Construction target of 11 per cent.

“QBuild provides decent, well paid, and secure employment.

“At this time of year, it is also important to remember the role QBuild plays during a disaster.

“QBuild staff are among the first on the ground, completing repairs and building works to get communities back on their feet.”

Mr de Brenni said the reinvigorated QBuild was part of the Government’s economic recovery plan.

“QBuild is today once again renowned as a major training ground for the next generation of blue-collar trades in Queensland,” Mr de Brenni said.

“QBuild serves to protect the government’s capability to build, maintain and repair whatever and whenever is needed thanks to an always on-hand workforce.

“I encourage everyone interested in a trades job that offers variety and job security – and where opportunities are endless – to keep an eye out for the jobs being advertised on SmartJobs .”
