Firefighters today celebrated the official opening of the new $3 million state-of-the-art Charters Towers Fire and Rescue Station.

In addition, planning is underway for the number of fulltime firefighters permanently based at the facility to double, with the addition of at least an extra five firefighters.

The Charters Towers station’s operations are further supported by 12 auxiliary firefighters currently attached to the station.

This boost to the Charters Towers community is part of the government’s commitment to deliver an extra 357 firefighters to the frontline.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said the facility would strengthen frontline firefighting services in the area.

“This is a win-win for Charters Towers.

“A new state-of-the-art fire station facility, and more firefighters on the way.

“It’s all about protecting the community.

“To put it in a broader context, it is really important to recognise the implications of a changing climate and population growth in areas like Charters Towers and build infrastructure to match the community’s evolving needs,” Mr Ryan said.

“That’s why we invested $3 million upgrading the original Charters Towers Fire and Rescue Station to a spacious and modern facility for permanent and auxiliary firefighters.”

The station includes a dual engine bay, training rooms, a vertical rescue training tower, a large storage area and a purpose-built breathing apparatus room.

“This significant investment in infrastructure shows a commitment to the safety of the people who reside, work or visit the area.

“Charters Towers and the surrounding communities can rest assured Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is well equipped to respond to a wide range of emergencies.”

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said the updated facility would better enable firefighters to work hand-in-hand with the Charters Towers community to prevent and respond to disasters.

“It’s a pleasure to see Charters Towers’ firefighters operate out of the station and make the most of the upgraded facilities,” Mr Leach said.

“I know these facilities will not only be an asset to our firefighters, but to the wider Charters Towers community.

“Charters Towers Fire and Rescue firefighters respond to a variety of incidents, from structure fires to road traffic incidents and technical rescues.

“Charters Towers Fire and Rescue station also has the capability to respond to hazmat incidents.

“Significant quantities of hazardous materials are transported through North Queensland regularly to support industries and businesses, so it is vital QFES maintains hazmat capabilities to respond safely, quickly and effectively if an incident occurs.”

United Firefighters Union State Secretary John Oliver welcomed the Charters Towers initiative.

“Our firefighters on a daily basis do everything they can to keep the community and their properties safe.

“Any extra investment in that quest is to be welcomed and I acknowledge the government’s efforts in relation to community safety,” Mr Oliver said.
