Mount Isa Police launch community CCTV initiative

The Honourable Mark Ryan MP, Minister for Police Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, today joined Commissioner Katarina Carroll to announce the expansion of the Community Camera Alliance initiative in Mount Isa.

The Community Camera Alliance is a QPS-led program that encourages local businesses and residents with closed-circuit television (CCTV) to register their systems with police to assist in solving and preventing crime.

The introduction of Mount Isa to the Community Camera Alliance network makes for 13 policing districts and divisions around Queensland involved in the program.

The program is completely voluntary, with registration information only accessible by police on their secure database, and those who do register can request to be removed from the system at any time.

If a registered system is in an area that may assist in a police in an investigation, police will reach out to the registered owner and asked to help by providing footage.

Those interested in registering their CCTV systems can contact the Mount Isa Crime Prevention Unit or register online.

Minister Ryan said police were looking to the future with the introduction of the program.

“Police are harnessing this increasingly popular technology to create a network of resources to be able to solve crime faster, and prevent crime in the first place,” Minister Ryan said.

“This initiative promotes a positive relationship between members of the community and the police, providing a pathway for the public to be actively involved in protecting their own neighbourhoods.

“And while the program is completely voluntary, every person who registers their CCTV system with the Community Camera Alliance is working towards making their neighbourhoods safer and more family-friendly.”

Commissioner Carroll said the initiative formed a key component of modern policing.

“We are always seeking to obtain as much evidence and  information as possible  to assist with our  investigations,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“Establishing this network of CCTV systems in Mount Isa means investigators can call upon the community to assist in solving and preventing crime.

This is an excellent example of how Mount Isa residents and police are working in partnership to make the community safer.”
