Minister for Police and Corrective Services and Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan MP, joined Commissioner Katarina Carroll and Queensland Police Union of Employees General President Ian Leavers today to announce the building of the new Burketown Police Station.

The new station will replace the existing Burketown police facility on Gregory Street, which is now not fit for purpose.

With a budget of $2 million allocated from the Palaszczuk Government’s $300 million police infrastructure pipeline, construction for the new facility is due to be completed by mid-2022.

The new facility will provide modern facilities and include a public counter, interview room, dayroom, staff amenities and equipment storage.

Minister Ryan said the new station was a sign of the commitment the Queensland Government has to maintaining policing facilities at the highest possible standard irrespective of where they are located throughout our vast state.

“This new facility will enable police to continue providing a high quality service to the local community and the wider region of far north Queensland,” Minister Ryan said.

“I would like to thank the local police for their professionalism and dedication, and we know the new station will enable them to continue their great work.”

Commissioner Carroll said the new station would provide Burketown police with a necessary update to resources.

“The existing station has served our police well, but it is no longer suitable,” Commissioner Carroll said.

“Today’s announcement of the commitment to build a new station will provide Burketown police with a high standard facility and the necessary resources for police to continue their service of the Burketown community and beyond.”

Queensland Police Union of Employees General President, Ian Leavers welcomed the announcement of the new $2 million station.

“This is great news for our members who work in Burketown and across the region, Mr Leavers said.

“I want to thank the Minister and the Commissioner for making this commitment today as a real demonstration of their support for frontline police no matter where they live and work.”
