Nominate Queensland’s next Australian of the Year

Nominations are now open for Queenslanders to be recognised and celebrated in the 2022 Australian of the Year Awards.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk invited Queenslanders to think about what’s happening in their communities and workplaces, and to nominate people who are making a positive difference.

“Nominations are in four categories—Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Local Hero,” the Premier said.

“The people you suggest could be recognised at both a State and National level—all it takes is one nomination via https://events.premiers.qld.gov.au/australiaday/aus-of-the-year.aspx

Queensland’s 2022 Australian of the Year Award recipients will be announced in November and go on to represent the State at the national ceremony on the eve of Australia Day 2022.

“Now is the time to show your appreciation and nominate an outstanding Queenslander for the 2022 Australian of the Year Awards, including the quiet achievers whose contributions might otherwise be overlooked,” the Premier said.

“The Awards are also an opportunity to shine a light on an underrepresented issue or sector, with previous recipients using the platform to further educate Australians and steer important national conversations.”

Queensland’s 2021 Australian of the Year was Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM for his advocacy to help people with disabilities. Dr Palipana became the first quadriplegic medical graduate and medical intern in Queensland, and was recently admitted as a lawyer.

Aunty McRose Elu was recognised as Queensland’s 2021 Senior Australian of the Year for her unwavering vision to bring about change to better the lives of children and families. Aunty McRose is committed to reconciliation and sharing the traditional practices of her people.

Daniel Clarke and William Clarke were Queensland’s 2021 Young Australians of the Year for their conservation work and education about endangered orangutan populations in Borneo and Sumatra.

Founder and Director of Drought Angels, Natasha Johnston, was awarded Queensland’s 2021 Local Hero for her dedication to support thousands of drought-stricken farming families across Queensland and New South Wales.

The 2022 nominations close on Saturday 31 July 2021.
