The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk
Queenslanders can help celebrate this Sunday’s Queensland Day by sharing their stories of what makes them proud to live in the Sunshine State.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said Queensland would commemorate 162 years since separating from New South Wales, on 6 June 1859, through the stories of the people who live here.
“For this Queensland Day, Sunday 6 June, I encourage everyone to share what they love about living here, whether it is the people, places, opportunities or lifestyle, using the hashtag #myQLDstory,” the Premier said.
“We reached out to some proud Queenslanders to find out their Queensland story.
“Hear from singer songwriter Katie Noonan, Founder of Albatross Nippers Adjunct Assistant Professor Nick Marshall, 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM and Olympian Natalie Cook OAM.
“Queensland Day is an important celebration of our culture and heritage, and an opportunity to reflect on what it means to be a Queenslander and to live in our wonderful state,” the Premier said.
“More than five million people call Queensland home and any one story can change the way people think about and view the world, as we learn from the experiences of others.
“Queensland’s communities have dealt with the challenges of the global pandemic, underpinning our health and economic recovery, so I hope people gather to tell their story and share what makes them proud to be a Queenslander.”
Communities across the State are preparing to celebrate Queensland Day with initiatives including lighting up landmarks in maroon, hosting a Queensland Day Sponsorship Program event, or sharing their Queensland story with family and friends.
Queensland Day will also be commemorated with the 2021 Queensland Greats Awards on Tuesday 8 June. The Awards recognise the efforts and achievements of Queenslanders who have made a long-term contribution to the history and development of the State.
