The Honourable Shannon Fentiman

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman today announced the appointment of the newest Justice to the Queensland Supreme Court Trial Division, Paul Freeburn QC.

Minister Fentiman said Justice Freeburn had established himself as a professional across both state and federal jurisdictions and brought a wealth of experience to the Supreme Court bench.

“Justice Freeburn QC has dedicated almost four decades of service to the legal sector and is a highly respected Queensland barrister with chambers in Brisbane,” Minister Fentiman said.

“He has led a distinguished career, appearing in a variety of complex and high-profile cases, including commercial litigation and arbitrations, matters of professional and medical negligence, proceeds of crime litigation, fraud, construction and civil penalty prosecutions.

“The newest member of the judiciary has also displayed a strong appetite for appellate matters, highlighting the breadth of his dedication to the legal system in Queensland.”

He has previously worked as a solicitor and a senior associate with Queensland law firms and appeared as Senior Counsel assisting the Barrett Adolescent Centre Commission of Inquiry – providing recommendations for the delivery of state-wide adolescent mental health services.

“The incoming Justice has also displayed a passion for assisting the vulnerable in our community, serving as a board member for the community legal service Basic Rights Queensland.

“And he has played a leading role in mentoring and educating up and coming junior barristers in our State, as a member of the Bar Association of Queensland.”

Justice Freeburn began his career in 1983, was called to the Bar in 1990 and was recognised for his work and received Silk in 2003.

“I would like to congratulate him on his appointment to the Bench and wish him every success in the role.”

The appointment was made in accordance with the Judicial Appointment Advisory Protocol.

Justice Freeburn’s appointment begins formally from 20 May 2021.
