The Honourable Justice John Bond has been appointed to the Queensland Court of Appeal, replacing the retiring Justice Anthe Philippides.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Shannon Fentiman today announced the appointment of Justice Bond, who has sat on the Supreme Court since 2015.
“Justice Bond has built an outstanding reputation over the 34 years since being admitted as a barrister,” Minister Fentiman said.
“He was an expert in commercial litigation across a broad spectrum including such areas as banking and finance, building and construction, mining, corporations, and native title law.”
As a part-time member of the Queensland Law Reform Commission for nine years, Justice Bond was involved in numerous significant reviews.
His Honour was one of two judges managing the Commercial List of the Supreme Court over the past six years, where he was also the chair of the Rules Committee.
He is a true Queenslander – he was born in Southport and grew up in Brisbane, apart from a nine-month stint in Fiji during his primary school years.
His Honour was set upon becoming a lawyer from an early age and was later strongly influenced by his time as an associate with Sir Gerard Brennan in the High Court of Australia.
“Justice Bond brings a valuable skill set to the court of appeal which complements the formidable attributes of his fellow justices,” Minister Fentiman said.
“I would also like to thank Justice Philippides for her dedication and service to the State over the last 20 years.”
The Court of Appeal is a division of the Supreme Court that hears all appeals from the Supreme and District Courts, and many tribunals.
