Mental health, consent, employment and training and life in regional communities are among the important issues young North Queenslanders have spoken out about in a powerful roundtable held as part of the Queensland Youth Week Speak Out Series.
Hosted by Youth Affairs Minister Meaghan Scanlon, today’s Mossman Gorge forum saw young people gather to discuss with their peers the challenges their local communities face and the future of their society, environment, and culture.
Minister Scanlon said the forum included a diverse cross-section of passionate young people representing different ages, backgrounds and lived experiences.
“The morning was a great opportunity for young people to connect and share their views on what’s happening in their community and their ideas for improvement,” Ms Scanlon said.
“The discussions included a focus on youth mental health, youth engagement, consent, environment and climate change and it was an opportunity for them to talk about priority local issues, such as housing, employment and education from their perspective.
“The group also participated in a Dreamtime Walk that celebrated the area and set the scene for a great discussion.”
Minister Scanlon said the forum was an opportunity to celebrate the young people of Queensland and their strong commitment to making sure their voices are heard.
"We had a really engaging conversation about the issues that are really important to them. I was particularly impressed with the enthusiasm and energy everyone brought to the discussion," Ms Scanlon said.
“I am passionate about ensuring young people are supported to have their views and ideas heard in shaping our future.
“The more we bring young Queenslanders to the table and listen to their ideas on how to shape government business, policy and programs, the stronger we will be.”
The FNQ Speak Out forum was one of three being held this week to celebrate Queensland Youth Week with other roundtables being held in Central Queensland and South East Queensland.
