The Honourable Stirling Hinchliffe
This weekend more than 900 touch footballers from across Queensland are in Bundaberg for the sixth Bundaberg Cup.
Sixty-three teams have registered, up from 48 teams last year, making the event one of the largest Bundaberg Cups ever.
Member for Bundaberg Tom Smith said the Bundaberg Cup would deliver hundreds of thousands of dollars in economic benefit to the region with 75 per cent of competitor teams from outside of Bundaberg.
“Local accommodation providers, hotels, cafes and restaurants will benefit with almost 1,000 touch footballers and spectators in town for the weekend,” Mr Smith said.
“Now in the sixth year of competition, Bundaberg is proving itself to be one of the major touch football cities in Queensland.
“This is another opportunity to showcase our region which is already so famous for producing Australia’s best small crops, world-famous distilleries and breweries and being the gateway to the southern Great Barrier Reef.
“I’m looking forward to getting out there and seeing the high-quality touch footy on display.
“Good luck to all of the teams, but I’ll be cheering on the Bundy locals the loudest.”
Tourism and Sport Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the Bundaberg Cup was a great celebration of sport for both players and spectators.
“It’s fantastic to see the growth of touch in Queensland and athletes of all abilities and experience in Bundaberg for a weekend festival of football,” Mr Hinchliffe said.
“The Bundaberg Cup is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s It’s Live! In Queensland events calendar because we know how important events of this calibre are for supporting jobs, local business and helping Queensland tourism to rebuild better after COVID-19.
“With the majority of competitors and spectators from outside Bundaberg, it’s also the perfect opportunity to explore some of the many wonders of the Southern Great Barrier Reef.”
The Bundaberg Cup is one of Australia’s richest Touch Football knockouts with a $20,000 prize pool across nine social and competitive divisions.
Clive Churchill Medallist and event ambassador Scott Prince will be on the field this weekend.
“I’m really excited to be returning to Bundaberg and competing,” he said.
It’s a great event, not only in terms of the prize money on offer, but the social aspect and connections you make.
I’m thrilled to see the large numbers competing this year, it’s going to be awesome.”
The Bundaberg Cup is proudly supported by the Palaszczuk Government’s Tourism and Events Queensland and Bundaberg Regional Council.
