Crows Nest receives $580k boost to firefighting response

The Crows Nest community received a major boost to their firefighting and rescue capabilities today after the official handover of a new firefighting appliance to the Crows Nest Fire and Rescue Station.

Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan said the $580 000 Type 2 Urban Pumper appliance would ensure local firefighters were well-equipped to serve the community during emergency and disaster events.

“This state-of-the-art vehicle is part of the State Government’s ongoing commitment to delivering the latest firefighting technology,” Minister Ryan said.

“It uses the Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS) to maximise on-board water and foam supplies, which is particularly important in rural areas.

“The appliance is also fitted with the latest road crash rescue equipment (jaws of life), a thermal imaging camera and gas detector for improved protection of crew and public safety.”

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) responds to a wide range of incidents each year and appliances like these enable them to answer the call for help, Mr Ryan said.

“It is always a privilege to support our firefighters in the lifesaving work they do, and this new appliance is a fantastic addition to the region’s firefighting capabilities,” he said.

QFES Commissioner Greg Leach said the new appliance would primarily service Crows Nest and provide valuable back up to nearby communities such as Highfields and Goombungee.

“The Crows Nest station has supported the community by responding to 38 incidents since July last year, including 35 incidents for which they were the first responder,” Mr Leach said.

“The community relies on the courage and expertise of our Fire and Rescue Service firefighters to keep them safe during emergencies.

“This specialised equipment can be used to respond to a wide range of emergencies, including structural fires, grass and bushfires, road crash rescues and hazardous incidents.

“The vehicle will not only deliver invaluable assistance when responding to the needs of the community but will also increase safety for our firefighters.

“The local community can rest assured their firefighters are ready to respond quickly and effectively to any emergency.”
