The 2020-21 State Budget will deliver a $42 million shot in the arm for Queensland’s racing industry.

Racing Minister Grace Grace said the Budget spend includes $17.6 million for country racing clubs across Queensland as part of the six year $105.6 million Country Racing Program.

“This year’s State Budget will see $6.93 million expended to complete the $24.8 million commitment to deliver capital works at Ipswich Turf Club's Bundamba Racecourse,” she said.

“The Budget features $1.5 million to provide new raceday stalls as part of the redevelopment of Cluden Park in Townsville.

“Design and feasibility work worth $790,000 has also been allocated for the Gold Coast Turf Club Tracks and Lights Project, as part of the recently announced $31.5 million commitment to the redevelopment.

“And $4.87 million, as part of a $39 million commitment to construct the Greater Brisbane Greyhound Centre near Ipswich, has been provided to ensure the viability and vitality of the industry, while also improving animal welfare.”

Ms Grace said the industry demonstrated incredible resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic and funding through the State Budget would build on that success moving forward.

“Our Racing industry was a standout performer this year, with races continuing on while still adhering to safety requirements,” she said.

“The resilience shown by those within the industry was impressive, and importantly, provided enormous joy and entertainment at a time when we all needed a lift.

“It also meant that the industry weathered the storm and has a strong foundation to build on.

“We’ve seen how substantial Racing’s contribution to the State has been prior to COVID, contributing more than $1.6 billion to the economy, while supporting more than 12,600 jobs.

“With almost 40,000 participants, and almost 81 per cent of these in regional communities, the racing industry will play a vital role in the Government’s plan for economic recovery.

“These commitments by the Palaszczuk Government will guarantee industry growth and build on the goals kicked through the management and endurance of Racing in 2020.”
