Mango Hill State Secondary College celebrates official opening

Students at Mango Hill State Secondary College today celebrated the official opening of their brand new $64 million school.

Member for Murrumba Steven Miles said the College’s foundation students in Years 7 and 8, and school staff gathered for a ceremony to mark this special event.

“Mango Hill State Secondary College has had an incredible start to the school year, rising to the challenges of a global pandemic and delivering our children opportunities that will set them up for life," Mr Miles said. 

“I’m so proud to be here today to officially open the new school and welcome the community, it’s been a big year but we’re finally here. 

“The Foundation Principal Michael Rogers tells me the students handled the COVID-19 shut down with maturity and resilience, as a parent I know that we’re all so proud of them.

“We recently announced that we’re proceeding with Stage 2 of Mango Hill State Secondary College and I’m excited to watch the school grow and develop, and for the students to enjoy the new facilities we’re building.

“I’m also excited for the local construction jobs that this expansion will deliver for Mango Hill, COVID19 has been devastating for our community and expansions like this out part of our ongoing plan to get Queenslanders back to work.”

Education Minister Grace Grace said the new school was built on time and on budget for the start of the 2020 school year.

“This state-of-the-art secondary college has range of different facilities that students and staff love,” Ms Grace said.

“Building this school supported around 200 local jobs throughout its construction.

“Now we are getting on with the job of building stage 2 here at Mango Hill, which will support even more local jobs.

“This pipeline of work will continue to help tradies find work as our economy recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This is in addition to the $220 million building and maintenance bonanza for tradies we announced that will create 720 jobs across our Queensland state schools.

“The funding is on top of more than a billion dollars already announced for new schools and new classrooms creating even more jobs across the state in 2020.

The second stage of this school, which will deliver a senior science technology engineering and mathematics (STEM) centre, food and hospitality centre, art and design centre, performing arts centre and additional classrooms in the existing junior STEM centre.”

Mango Hill State Secondary College Principal Michael Rogers said the college had made significant progress towards creating a ‘REAL’ learning community.

“Our college vision is to create a community of Respectful, Engaged, and Aspiring Learners for the world of tomorrow,” he said.

“This vision speaks to the challenge and skill of engaging students through connections to real-world knowledge and experiences and empowering our students to be the best version of themselves possible.

“This new college provides rich specialist learning environments for students across all learning areas, including the arts, STEM, applied technology, business and ICT, and health and physical education.

“We are committed to instilling in all our students a curiosity and love for learning, to develop REAL learners for the world of tomorrow.”

While in the Moreton Bay region Ms Grace and Mr Miles also visited Griffin State School to see the Palaszczuk Government’s $19.8 million investment to expand the school.

“This fantastic school started just a few years ago in 2016 with around 240 students and is now a thriving school, with the community to back it up, with more than 940 students enrolled,” Mr Miles said.

“Our community is growing at a rapid pace, and Griffin State School is no exception, today we’ve officially opened three new buildings to ensure our children have the best possible learning opportunities.

“This construction work will also ensure we can deliver jobs for locals as Griffin unites and recovers from this global pandemic, which has had such a devastating impact on communities like Griffin.

The new facilities include:

• A new two-storey, 14 classroom teaching block with a staffroom, a space for digital and technology learning, a diverse learning hub, and multiple outdoor learning spaces.
• Another two-storey, 12 classroom block which includes a senior covered area, and additional staff car parking.
• And a new Prep to Year 1 block, beautiful play spaces, multipurpose courts.
