Organisations from across Queensland are being encouraged to apply for their share of $50,000 in grants for projects to raise awareness and provide better support for victims of domestic and family violence in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.

“This round of grants is part of the Palaszczuk Government’s commitment to strengthening its response to the impact of domestic and family violence on Queenslanders from CALD backgrounds,” said Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, Di Farmer.

“At a recent CALD forum we convened, isolation was identified as a key theme from the unique experiences and challenges shared by CALD communities.

“This is one of the issues that we need to all work together to overcome.

“Women from CALD communities need to know that they are not alone, and many services are there to support them.

“These grants are intended to help get this message across to more CALD communities and support those directly impacted by domestic and family violence,” she said.

The grants allow organisations to apply for one-off funding of up to $5,000 with applications now open. Successful recipients are expected to be announced during Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month in May.

The Not Now, Not Ever report and the Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Strategy 2016–2026 found people from CALD backgrounds were either at significant risk of violence or faced greater challenges in accessing support services to help them escape or recover from the violence.

“Queenslanders have said not now, not ever to violence in our communities and to work together to raise awareness of this issue that affects far too many Queenslanders,” Ms Farmer said.

“Domestic and family violence is a scourge on our society, and I hope in 2020 we can build on the terrific work being done throughout Queensland to lend an extra hand to CALD communities.”
