Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence
The Honourable Di Farmer
Highly respected domestic violence advocacy group Our Watch will deliver the first of a series of lunchbox sessions today (29 October) to help community and corporate organisations in Queensland take action against domestic and family violence.
Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer said the fully subscribed October session delivered on a commitment made at the Safe at Home, Work and Play corporate and community forum in September.
“The corporate and community sector has an incredible reach into the lives of everyday Queenslanders, which means it also has an immense capacity to drive change,” she said.
“We want to make sure we support the sector to harness this power, which is why we’re hosting these Lunchbox Sessions, led by experts, to help organisations identify how they can get started, and for us to learn what support organisations need.
“I am delighted Our Watch will be presenting the session on Workplace Equality and Respect processes.”
Our Watch leads Australia’s work to stop violence against women and their children by driving change in the structures, norms and practices that lead to violence against women and children.
Our Watch CEO Patty Kinnersly said evidence showed that violence against women could be reduced in Australia by increasing gender equality in all elements of everyday life – particularly workplaces, where many adults spent a large portion of their time.
“Our Watch’s training can support organisations to assess and identify key actions to ensure that gender equality and respect are at the centre of everyone’s workplace,” she said.
Ms Farmer said the next lunchbox session will take place on Thursday 21 November and will focus on how to implement appropriate responses to perpetrators within workplaces.
“Last month’s forum has really started something,” she said.
“It has created momentum with more corporate organisations getting involved every day to address domestic and family violence in Queensland,
“We must maintain this momentum and continue to build our work together to end domestic and family violence in Queensland.”
