Taskforce to be established to help Binna Burra Lodge recover

As devastating bushfires continue to burn across Queensland, the Palaszczuk Government has announced a taskforce will be set up to support the heritage-listed Binna Burra Lodge.

The iconic 86-year-old tourism destination was gutted over the weekend by bushfires raging across the Scenic Rim, however, owners of the property have stated their intention to rebuild the facility and add to its proud legacy.

Minister for State Development Cameron Dick said the Department of State Development, Manufacturing, Infrastructure and Planning (DSDMIP) will form the taskforce to provide Binna Burra Lodge with assistance as it recovers.

In particular, the taskforce will focus on supporting displaced staff.

“We’ve been in contact this morning with Chairman of Binna Burra Lodge Steve Noakes to extend our hand and offer our assistance to staff,” Mr Dick said.

“We appreciate this is a very difficult time for everyone affected and we want them to know our government is here to support them with their recovery.

“DSDMIP will work with support providers and the business community to do whatever we can to keep people employed and minimise disruption to people’s lives.

“If required, our Worker Transition Program can help with access to financial assistance, information and support for job seekers, training and career information, help with debt and bills, and access to mental health services.

“Rebuilding and restoration is a crucial part of the overall recovery process, and we appreciate the love both locals and visitors hold for Binna Burra and the lodge itself,” he said.

“We will work with lodge owners and local government agencies to ensure any required approvals are fast-tracked so that rebuilding is not delayed.”

Binna Burra Lodge Chairman Steve Noakes said both he and staff appreciated the government’s offer of assistance.

“We look forward to working with the whole community to get Binna Burra back on its feet,” Mr Noakes said.

“While this has been an incredibly difficult time for the business, my staff and family, it’s been gratifying to see so much love and support from the whole community.”
