Queensland Government launches new website for domestic violence victims

The Palaszczuk Government has removed one more obstacle for victims of domestic and family violence seeking support with the launch of a new website.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Di Farmer announced the new website at this evening’s Darkness to Daylight Event, saying when a person starts to realise that their relationship may not be healthy or when they make the brave decision to leave a domestic and family violence situation, it is vital they receive wrap-around support.

“I’ve had conversations with people affected by domestic and family violence, all around Queensland, and what I’ve heard really strongly is that people need one place they can go for information that’s easy to access,” she said.

“We know that 1 in 5 women over the age of 15, and 1 in 20 men have experienced sexual violence.

“That means that everyone knows someone, perhaps more than one person who is affected by DV.

“During Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month I’ve been asking everyone, if you suspect someone you know is experiencing domestic and family violence, reach out and let them know you care.

“It’s also important to help connect them with support and information, and this website is one way you can find out how to do that.”

The portal was developed in consultation with domestic and family violence services as well as victims of domestic and family violence.

“Navigating government websites can be a bit of a trial at the best of times, especially when you need to go to a few different places to get the answers you need,” she said.

“For people affected by domestic and family violence, it can be really hard to find the information and support you need, especially if you don’t have a lot of time to search.

“Oftentimes, people who are looking for information are looking in times of extreme stress.

“What we’ve done with this site is bring all of that information together into one website which is easy and quick to use.

“We’ve even made sure the web address is simple and straightforward – it’s one you can say easily, which makes it easy to tell people about.

“That way, no matter where someone is in Queensland, they can go to the one website and find local support and information.”

Ms Farmer said people affected by domestic and family violence can require a range of support services or general information.

“This includes information, legal advice, housing options, mental health support, court support, advice around child custody arrangements and even employment options,” she said.

“A lot of that information is already out there on different websites, but it can take multiple visits to multiple websites for people to find the information they need.

“We want to make it easier for people to access the information and support they need, when they need it, in one central place.”
