Catchment confirmed for new Inner City North State Secondary College

The catchment area for the new Inner City North State Secondary College has been released today.

Education Minister and McConnel MP Grace Grace said families from within the school’s catchment could now apply to enrol in the school’s foundation Year 7 class in 2020.

“After consulting with the local community late last year, the Department of Education has finalised the catchment for the new state high school, providing much anticipated certainty for local families,” Ms Grace said.

“It’s fantastic to achieve this milestone, which will allow us to open enrolments for the first cohort of Year 7 students, so they are ready to start school in Term 1, 2020.

“The feedback from the local community highlighted that the local inner northern Brisbane communities are very excited to be a part of this future-focused secondary college.”

Ms Grace said the catchment area was developed using a negotiated catchment boundary that has been informed by using equidistant boundary principles but of not splitting residential streets, a consistent approach to the Inner City South State Secondary College catchment.

Inner City North State Secondary College Principal Sharon Barker said she couldn’t wait to hear from potential new foundation students and their families.

“During the consultation period, the Department of Education called for preliminary expressions of interest for enrolments and has had more than 250 initial EOIs,” Ms Barker said.

“Now that the catchment has been finalised, all eligible families, including those that submitted a preliminary expression of interest, are now encouraged to apply to enrol at our school.” 

After opening to Year 7 students in 2020, the college will grow another year level each year through until 2025, when the school will offer all Years 7 to 12.

Minister Grace said construction of the school was progressing daily, with the Brookes Street precinct and junior learning building well underway. These buildings will form the learning environments for the start of the 2020 school year.

“The site is a hive of activity and it’s exciting to see the buildings taking shape,” Ms Grace said.

“With the crane now onsite, the vertical buildings to be delivered during 2020 are already out of the ground and progressing well.

“The existing Brookes Street building is also undergoing a transformation ready for the opening in January 2020.”

The project is part of the Queensland Government’s $808 million Building Future Schools Fund.
