Year of the Pig headed for Bundaberg with Chinese New Year Celebrations

Multicultural Affairs Minister Stirling Hinchliffe is encouraging Bundaberg residents to celebrate the 2019 Chinese New Year at a festival being funded by the Palaszczuk Government.

Mr Hinchliffe said 2019 Chinese New Year Celebrations will be held in various Bundaberg CBD venues on Saturday 16 February, featuring spectacular performances by artists from Bundaberg’s sister city Nanning.

“The Palaszczuk Government is proud to be partnering with Bundaberg Regional Council to celebrate the Year of the Pig at Chinese New Year in February,” he said.

“The Council will receive $8,000 annually for the next three years to help bring all the colour and spectacle of Lion and Dragon Dancing, lantern parades and of course fireworks to Bundaberg.

“I encourage the Bundaberg community to get behind this exciting cultural event – it’s a family-friendly occasion with something for people of all ages to enjoy.”

Mr Hinchliffe said in 2019 the Palaszczuk Government would provide more than $73,000 for the Community Action for Multicultural Society (CAMS) program in Bundaberg, which supports people from different cultural backgrounds to fulfil their social and economic ambitions.

“The PalaszczukGovernment will also offer a one-off grant of $8,000 to Ol Meri Wantok-Bundaberg Inc for Bundaberg Region Intercultural Immersion 2019,” he said.

Bundaberg Regional Council Mayor Jack Dempsey welcomed the State Government’s Celebrating Multicultural Queensland funding allocation.

“This funding will build cross cultural understanding and foster greater appreciation for the people of different cultures living in the Bundaberg Region,” Cr Dempsey said.

“The Chinese New Year celebrations play an integral role in highlighting the great respect our region holds for its cultural diversity.”

The Palaszczuk Government has increased the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland events funding for 2018-19 to over $1.3 million, supporting 152 festivals or events across Queensland.
