Photographers snap up paradise – Fraser Island Photo Competition winners announced!

Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch congratulated the winners of the ‘Snap Up Some Paradise’ photo competition celebrating the 25th anniversary of the inscription of K’gari (Fraser Island) on the World Heritage List.

The Palaszczuk Government, in partnership with the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation, Queensland Museum, Wildlife Australia and Fraser Coast Tourism and Events, received 354 entries across three categories – Landscapes, Flora & Fauna and Sand & Water – highlighting the island’s natural beauty.

“It was a tough competition ––each entry captured the natural wonder of K’gari, and the importance of protecting its beauty for future generations,” said Ms Enoch.

“On the 25^th anniversary of its World Heritage listing, this competition was a wonderful opportunity to promote and celebrate K’gari’s unique World Heritage values.

“Inscribed in 1992, K’gari is the world’s largest sand island and contains ancient complex sand dune systems, tall rainforests growing in sand and half the world’s perched lakes,” she said.

Butchulla spokesperson and talented artist Conway Burns said he was excited to share the international significance of K’gari with current and future generations through photography and art.

“These images depict the true natural beauty of K’gari and stand as a testament to those who have dedicated their lives to protecting her,” Mr Burns said.

The winning photographs will be showcased in the K’gari 2019 Calendar – 25^th Anniversary Limited Edition, and in the December 2018 Issue of Wildlife Australia Magazine.
