Slip-resistant Goodwill Bridge re-opens for cyclists

Minister for Housing and Public Works Mick de Brenni was this morning (Tuesday) among the first cyclists to test the new surface designed to make Brisbane’s Goodwill Bridge safer in wet weather.

Mr de Brenni gave the new surface “with plenty of grip” the thumbs-up.

“The previous surface may have met the Australian standard, but it certainly didn’t meet community expectations,” Mr de Brenni said.

“This surface is now as safe as we can make it for cyclists and pedestrians.

“I’d like to thank all bridge users for their patience while we addressed their concerns, and cyclists for following the signs and dismounting and wheeling their bikes during the work.”

Built in 2001, the bridge connects the Gardens Point campus of QUT with South Bank and the South East Bikeway and is used by more than 10,000 cyclists, runners and pedestrians every day.

Bicycle Queensland CEO Anne Savage commended the “Minister and the Department of Housing and Public Works for listening to our concerns and getting this work done”.

“Bicycle Queensland was closely consulted at all stages of this process to ensure the expectations of cyclists would be met. I’m pleased to say the new surface is well and truly slip resistant, and safe for cyclists,” she said.

The resurfacing work was carried out by Global Road Maintenance Systems, which is based at Seventeen Mile Rocks in Brisbane’s western suburbs.

Mr de Brenni said up to 13 staff worked to resurface the bridge with OmniDeck, a proven slip-resistant road surface treatment.

“The resurfacing - conducted in stages to minimise disruption - was also a great opportunity to introduce a new colour scheme that resonated with the spirit of Queensland,” he said.

“The outer edges of the surface for pedestrians are maroon – Queensland’s iconic colour.

“The mid-section on the Bridge, where cyclists are encouraged to ride, is painted grey with large green bicycle symbols at various intervals.”
