Strong interest in state’s Australian-first tourism infrastructure fund

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones said the government had been overwhelmed with applications from tourism operators around the state keen to access the state’s Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

Ms Jones said the government had received 100 applications from around the state and 27 applicants would now be invited to submit full business cases.

“The Growing Tourism Infrastructure fund is the first of its kind in Australia – never before has any state government partnered with so many operators to deliver new tourism infrastructure,” she said.

“The overwhelming response we’ve had in the last few weeks goes to show how important this initiative is.

“More tourists than ever before are choosing to visit Queensland. But we know that to grow this industry we need new infrastructure to lure visitors. That’s what the GTI fund is all about. 

Ms Jones said expressions of interest (EOIs) closed in September 2018.

“This fund was established as part of our $36 million commitment to future-proofing Queensland’s tourism industry,” she said.

“It was great to see some standout applications right around the state - from the Torres Strait, to outback Queensland and along the Coast.

“The applications include proposals offer us some great scope for different experiences throughout Queensland - from rural glamping and thrilling wildlife encounters to new adventure activities and paddock-to-plate food experiences.

The first stage of assessment is now complete and 27 applicants have been invited to provide a full business case by early December.

Ms Jones said funding would be available to successful applicants on a dollar-for-dollar basis for eligible capital works for tourism projects that are construction ready.
