Minister for Education and Minister for Industrial Relations
The Honourable Grace Grace

Happy State Education Week!

State schools across Queensland are celebrating State Education Week 2018 which kicks off from today.

Education Minister Grace Grace said the annual week (21-27 October) was an important celebration of education and a chance for schools to further strengthen relationships with the wider community.

“This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating our Community’ and I invite schools to take up the challenge to showcase their unique qualities and join with their local communities to reflect on their achievements and acknowledge the great work being done,” Ms Grace said.

“Successful education and supporting bright futures for our young people is a community effort.

“The week will culminate in World Teachers’ Day on Friday 26 October – a chance to thank the more than 50,000 teachers who inspire our students every day, harness the talent within our state schools and showcase what is unique about each of our communities.”

Ms Grace said one of the state-wide activities in this year’s week of celebrations was the Community Principal program running from Monday 8 October to Friday 26 October 2018.

Launched for the first time last year, participation in this program has more than doubled this year with 45 schools registered from across the state.

Ms Grace said there had been a great interest from local identities and important community members to take on the program this year.

“The community principals will undertake a variety of activities to get a first-hand glimpse of a principal’s role,” Ms Grace said.

“They’ll meet with students, staff and parents, visit classrooms, undertake tuckshop shifts and playground duties.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students and staff to interact with role models and gain insight into the world beyond school.”

Ms Grace said additional State Education Week events included morning teas and special assemblies recognising teachers on World Teachers’ Day on Friday 26 October.

The 2018 Showcase Awards for Excellence in Schools will also take place on this day.
