The Honourable Grace Grace
Farm safety messages through the eyes and hands of young Queenslanders
After their success in a state-wide drawing competition, the works of 12 talented primary school students feature in the 2019 edition of the farm safety calendar.
Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace praised the winners chosen from more than 1800 entries in the annual competition run by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland.
“With so many entries, the judges had a really tough time picking 12 winners,” Ms Grace said.
“This year we opened the drawing competition to all primary schools and we received a record number of nominations, shattering the previous best of 700.
“I am amazed with the quantity and quality, there were so many colourful drawings and heartfelt safety messages.
“I’d like to thank all the children and teachers for their efforts, but sadly there are only 12 months in a year and that limits the number of winners.
“The judges also deserve a big pat on the back as it took some time to sift through all the entries.”
The farm safety calendar highlights important messages about working and playing safely on the land. Themes this year included quad bikes; motorbikes and machinery; animal handling; sun safety and healthy lifestyle; kids on the land; and general farm safety.
“Tragically around 20 children are killed on farms in Australia every year, with many more hospitalised. That’s why we promote safety on rural properties every year through the farm safety calendar competition for school kids.
“The 12 successful artists not only got their works published in the 2019 calendar, they received a $250 voucher each, while their school gets $500,” said Ms Grace.
In the next couple of months, 20,000 calendars will be distributed around the state, ensuring there’s a year-long reminder for everyone to be farm safe.
