Members of Queensland’s new Truth, Healing and Reconciliation Taskforce established in response to the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse have met for the first time today (4 October).

Minister for Child Safety, Youth and Women Di Farmer said the Brisbane meeting was an important milestone in helping those impacted by child sexual abuse to heal.

“The Taskforce will make sure the voices of people who experienced institutional sexual abuse continue to be heard,” Ms Farmer said.

“The Queensland Government accepted 244 Royal Commission recommendations and as part of that committed to establishing this taskforce.

“Former Police Commissioner and Royal Commissioner Bob Atkinson is chairing the nine-person committee.

“The Taskforce is made up of members including victims and support providers who must now work to make sure the recommendations we have accepted are carried out.”

Chair Bob Atkinson said the Taskforce would provide honest, rigorous and transparent advice to the Minister and would work with the government to help guide implementation of activities and reform initiatives and help to raise public awareness of the impact of institutional child sexual abuse.

“Each year the Taskforce will report to the Minister on any areas for potential improvement,” he said.

“I look forward to working with members of the Taskforce to help support people who have been the victims of abuse as we endeavour to create as safe a community as is possible for the future in terms of prevention.”
