Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Mark Bailey

Works along the cyclone-damaged Gold Coast-Springbrook Road are on track as major efforts to rebuild the road continue.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said last year’s landslips on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road had a devastating impact on the local community.

"We’re working hard to restore this road as we know this damage has significantly changed the way locals go about their day-to-day lives," Mr Bailey said.

"TMR has advised me they expect the road to re-open in a limited capacity before the end of next month, weather conditions permitting.

“Hearing works are on track is a relief and testament to the hard working restoration team, as well as the patience of the local community.”

Mr Bailey said he was impressed by the detailed planning and preparation achieved by the crew given the scale of damage and the dangerous nature of safety and stabilisation works.

“We are making great progress with most sites now 90 per cent complete and waiting final treatments such as rock stabilising mesh,” Mr Bailey said.

“We will also spray more than 17,000m2 of hydromulch seed to start regeneration of vegetation on the mountain.

“Works outside the closed section of the road are underway and work on Pine Creek Road will also start soon.

“Once Gold Coast-Springbrook Road has re-opened, work on Pine Creek Road will continue with reduced speed limits and lane closures.’’

Mr Bailey said it was important motorists obeyed all signs and drove to the conditions to ensure road workers and motorists stayed safe.

"Delays of up to 15 minutes may occur along the route, which will remain a construction site until the project is completed," Mr Bailey said.

“The project is on track for completion in December, weather permitting.’’

Gold Coast-Springbrook Road was closed because of significant geotechnical failures following substantial rainfall from Cyclone Debbie.

While restoration works on Gold Coast-Springbrook Road continue, motorists are using Pine Creek Road as an alternative route.

Eligible reconstruction works will be jointly funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
