‘Queenslander!’ Cheer Goes Up at US Open
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has congratulated Brisbane’s John Millman after he defeated the great Roger Federer at the US Open.
Federer has won 20 Grand Slam titles. It was the first time John had reached the fourth round in any.
“Queensland has a proud history in tennis,” the Premier said.
“Pat Rafter, Rod Laver and Daphne Fancutt to name just a few.
“To have defeated a champion of Roger Federer's calibre must be an incredible thrill for John and his family, and we are all so proud.”
Millman made his debut at the Brisbane International aged 21.
Critics are calling his defeat of Federer as one of the greatest upsets of the game.
It was huge battle: 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 7-6.
Three times Millman has fought back from crushing injuries and surgeries.
“It’s clear John is a fighter,” the Premier.
“We Queenslanders are like that.”
Millman next faces Novak Djokovic on Thursday.
The Premier said all Queensland will be behind him and urged Aussies in New York to paint Flushing Meadows maroon.
“The Americans probably won’t understand it, but we will when the chant goes out: QUEENSLANDER!”
